Interview: Nouveau Riche 8485

Nouveau Riche 8485 is a new label created by Nigerian designers Tolani Aremu and Kolapo Alex-Oni. The brand emerged from these designers' idea to merge the traditional with the contemporary and create pieces with a 'refined edge'.

Can you tell my readers about the designers behind Nouveau Riche 8485?

Kolapo: I was born in Lagos and eventually ended up in New York where I attended St. John's University graduating with a degree in Toxicology.

Tolani: I was also born in Lagos, Nigeria and moved to New York in the 90’s. In 2005 I relocated temporarily to Atlanta, GA to continue my education. I graduated with a business degree from Georgia State University and I am currently working on my MBA. Somehow I always managed to balance my school life with my passion, which was fashion. I did so through styling, merchandising, interning and writing.

How did Nouveau Riche 8485 begin?

Kolapo: The brand was actually Tolani's brain child. We had worked together on clothing lines in the past, and she convinced me that we could use the skills and lessons we'd learned to create a brand of our own-one which showcases designs we would actually wear.

Tolani: Shortly after working on previous clothing lines, I figured Kolapo and I had amassed enough experience to start on our own line. In addition to that I was at a funny crossroad in my life and needed to be involved in something new. I had a strong background in business and fashion and Kolapo was, and is, the most creative and fashion savvy person I know and I believed that together we had a lot of offer the fashion world. The rest is history.

Who is your ideal customer?

Kolapo: An individual who has fun with her style; one who plays by her own rules but doesn't try too hard-she just gets "it."

Tolani: She definitely has to be someone who isn’t afraid to be who she is and as Kolapo said, she has to be someone who has fun with fashion.

How old is she?

Kolapo & Tolani: We would imagine that anyone from ages 16-30 could envision herself in our dresses.

What does she do for a living?

She’s your everyday girl. She works hard and plays hard. When she plays hard she wants to look the part.

Which designers, Nigerian and International, inspire you?

Kolapo: I appreciate the aesthetic of designers such as Alexander Wang, Cushnie et Ochs and the playful nature of Jean Charles de Castelbajac, Jeremy Scott, and Viktor and Rolf. But lately, I've been enamored by vintage Versace collections.

Tolani: I admire the work of genius designers such as Alexander Wang, Ashish, Balenciaga, Lanvin and Comme des Garçons yet still I enjoy the timeless pieces and innovation by Chloe and Chanel. I appreciate our home grown and internationally recognized brand, Tsemaye Binitie

Hey everyone! Sorry for the seemingly never-ending absence! Second year at uni has been really tough so I haven't had time to stick to my at-least-one-post a week, but I promise I won't let it get this long again :)

So, I thought I'd share with you all the great news that Pop'Africana is releasing their second issue soon! Pop'Africana is a fairly new fashion and art magazine that I harbor an unhealthy obsession for. It may be a bit stalker-ish to call the creative director and editor-in-chief, Oroma Elewa, my idol/hero, but her work is truly amazing! She does a lot of the photography and styling in the magazine herself which I love, and I really wish I could have a job similar to hers in the future.

A couple weeks ago did an interview of Funfere Koroye, a friend and amazing designer. He recently launched the Lookbook for his label, Fusion Kelvar's Spring/Summer 2011 collection. Filled with timeless pieces with quirky accessories, this collection is certainly for the dapper.

1. What brought about Fusion Kevlar? What inspired/ still inspires you to create these accessories?

I wanted to create a line of uniqueness and creativity. I like to create Products and graphics synonymous with being dapper and royal. I am inspired by what people do not pay attention to, the little things we played with as kids and even what we have around us as adults.

2. What types of accessories does your line consist of?

My line consists of a lot more than I can cover. I have necklaces, watches, brooches, bowties, shirts and sunglasses. All made from materials ranging from plastics to wood.

3. What type of people are your accessories designed for?

As mentioned earlier, my line is designed for the dapper and creative. It also mixes in some street smarts and forward knowledge. Staying ahead of the trends and catching the attention of people around them.

4. What is your personal favorite creation in your entire line?

I would have to say my domino brooches, considering they are my creative brain child and will soon be copyrighted to my clothing line. You won’t find these anywhere else for sure unless I am copied.

5. Where are you based out of (where do you live)?

I am based out of Lagos Nigeria and Atlanta Georgia, but my store is online for now so I can ship to literally everywhere in the world.

6.How has Fusion Kevlar been doing thus far?

So far I can’t complain, I have had so many hits in the past year and the line is officially two years old. Have had my work looked at by professionals who have given me thumbs up, for example Johnny cupcakes.

7. What do you have planned for the future?

For the future, it is pretty simple, travel and make contacts. Asia is next on my list for the winter. Soon after I graduate, the plan is to go to graduate school in Milan, Italy. Get a working class job with a company I respect to learn more tools of the trade. The finally open up a store, in my home town, san Francisco, London and Hong Kong.

8. My other interests?

I am a very artistic and design oriented individual, my interest span far and wider than people can assimilate. I love photography, movies, music, architecture, fine art, poetry and engineering. all of which i plan to incorporate into my store and studio space.

that is a question i never know how to answer, today its Raf Simmons tomorrow its a guy in my class. style is so fluid i cant place my finger on who inspires me but a rough list includes

Yesterday, I was lucky enough to meet Maki Oh (Amaka Osakwe), an up and coming Nigerian designer. I actually wanted to work with her this summer but she was unavailable, but hopefully I will be able to some day :) She released her debut collection, 'Everything in Proportion' earlier this year, here are some of my favourite pieces..

I started my second week working at Deola Sagoe this week. It's been a bit more quiet with less to do but still so amazing! This is what I wore to work yesterday. I'll try to do more outfit posts, I've just been so lazy lately (I still blame the internet in Nigeria)!
Whenever I meet with my friends that are doing internships in places like banks and law firms, where they have to wear suits and button-up shirts, they ask how I can wear what I wear and I always joke 'I work in fashion, I can wear whatever I want' :P

Living the Dream

Hey everyone! Sorry for the lack of posting. Like I said before I'm back home in Nigeria and the internet connection is incredibly slow :(. But anyway, I thought I'd tell you guys about my internship for Deola Sagoe.
It's going reeaally great! I work quite long hours for no pay but I am really learning so much and loving every minute of it. I have basically been learning about how a design house works. An event took place on Saturday launching a new polo line and I got to help prepare for it which included dressing the mannequins, setting up the showroom, etc. It was a lot of work and a lot of fun.

This week, I've been taking part in a 'Fashion Camp' which is being held at my workplace. It is basically a week of seminars from various people in the fashion industry, started by Arieta Muja.

The past three days have been so insightful, I have learned a lot and got to meet so many people who have achieved the dream. It has definitely made me that much more sure that I want to work in the industry.

And lastly, I got a blog award quite a while ago and forgot to mention it. Thanks to the amazing Lady Noix de Coco from Fashion Coconuts for giving me this sweet blog award :)

Hey everyone! I'm still on holiday back home in Nigeria, but I got a job today! I will be working as an intern for the designer Deola Sagoe for a month. She is one of the, if not the, biggest designers not only in Nigeria but in Africa. She frequently showcases her work at Cape Town FW, and has also been at NY FW.
Her designs are well known because of the Haute Couture style of her Prêt-à-Porter lines. This AW10 season, however, she took a more classic approach. Here are some of my favourite pieces from the season.

What inspired you to create your own fashion blog?
My sister introduced me to the fashion blog, Karla’s Closet. From there I viewed loads of different blogs, and I thought starting my own would be a fun way to explore the fashion world.

Why the name ‘Voguish?’
It took me quite a while to settle on a name. I was browsing the Aldo shoes website and one of the shoes I really liked was described as being “voguish”, that’s where I got the name.

What other fashion blogs do you like to read?

A few days ago, I attended another course, this time at the London College of Fashion! It was an introduction to fashion styling for the media. We basically learned about the different roles of the stylist, how they fit into the industry, and best of all, we got to style a photo shoot! There were two models, each of which we had to find a look for. Our theme was "diva", which I incorporated into one of my looks, and I took a different direction for the second. We also got to work with a brilliant photographer and hair/make-up artist. Although we had limited time to find the outfits (an afternoon), I think it turned out quite well!

For this look, I was going for the diva theme. I thought the gold shorts were 'diva' so I paired it with the AA Bodysuit.

"Tribute" by Jeffrey Campbell

This limited edition Jeffrey Campbell shoe is a tribute to the late Alexander McQueen. It is very similar to the "Armadillo" Shoes that were released in one of McQueen's last collections. These shoes will be available in July, and a portion of the sales will be donated to a charity in honour of the late designer.
I'm not sure what I think of these yet.. What do you guys think?

Ready to Fish is a fashion label I recently discovered. From their AW 10/11 collection, I selected the knitwear pieces because I found those to be the most unique and captivating. I really like the idea of having whole outfits solely in knitwear, and still managing to make the looks high fashion. With the knit trousers, you would expect them to look quite tacky like tracksuit bottoms, but in this case they don't. My favourite look is the second one down on the right, I just really love the color! Which are your favourites?

The New Creative Director

After the passing of Alexander McQueen earlier this year, there has been some speculation over what would happen to the company. Despite some opinions that the label should have been stopped as a sign of respect, about a week ago, a new creative director was named.
Sarah Burton, who was the late designer's right hand woman, has been appointed as the new creative director of the label Alexander McQueen. Burton had been working alongside McQueen for almost 16 years, and had a big part in contributing to the AW10 collection. The collection was only 80% finished when McQueen passed, but Burton was able to complete it. I was going through the Vogue Paris website, and came across a street style section. Here are some of the photos I really like..

What I really like about this outfit is the colour palette. The ability to use pretty much just white and black and still pull it off without looking too plain.

I really like this look because she is able to make the army look look very feminine. I wouldn't have thought that the heels would go with the trousers, but she makes it work.

I love this look, mainly because of the Miu Miu shoes :P. The outfit itself isn't particularly eye-catching, but the shoes definitely give it a boost.

Through searching loads of websites and blogs, I came across Su-Shi. Their bags are completely handmade with real leather and have gorgeous detail. Here are some of their satchel bags.

Alexander Wang launched his first underwear collection, an expansion of T by Alexander Wang, on his website about a month ago. Like the SS10 collection, it is very sportswear-inspired, with a feminine element. I never thought too much about underwear as a part of my outfit, but these bras would go so well under see-through button up shirt or a lace top.

That Red Dress

When I saw this red dress from H&M's Garden Collection, I was really inspired and decided to take a stab at drawing it..

I really struggled with the texture of the bottom part of the dress, but I think it turned out quite well. However, my attempt at making her hair blonde went terribly wrong, but I'm proud of my work on the dress :)

This Is How Knitwear is Done

Designers Annalisa Dunn and Dorothee Hagemann first met at Central St. Martins in London. It was here that their shared interests in knitwear lead them to create their brand now know as Cooperative Designs. I'm a really big fan of knitwear myself, so I love their unique and daring ways to incorporate this medium to all types of clothing.

Their first collection, created separately at St. Martins in 2007, is still my favourite. You can see the differences in Dunn and Hagemann's styles here. Dunn's collection uses a lot of chunky and flashy material whereas Hagemann's collection is more of a clean preppy look.

Since the SS10 fashion shows, one trend that I have been battling with is the clog trend. Ordinarily, I wouldn't wear clogs, but I've recently been swayed. Out of all the clogs I've come across, the 'Charlie Clogs' by Jeffrey Campbell have really stood out to me.

I've come across so many people sporting these shoes and I think they wear it so well!
So my questions are, what do you think of the clog trend, and should I buy these Jeffrey Campbells?

Spring is finally here! Time to throw out those bulky coats and make way for some lighter clothing. I've been looking for the perfect jackets for spring, and after reading loads and loads of fashion magazines for inspiration, I've come up with three types of jackets that are essential for this season.

THE TRENCH
Trenches are always a trend during the spring, but this SS10 season, the trench has been taken to a whole new level.

Burberry Prorsum does the classic trench with a twist. The style of a normal trench coat is used here, but changes in the fabric and cut transforms it to a dress.

Another way to go is the sleeveless trench, as shown by Celine and Alexander Wang.

THE BLAZER
Blazer's have been trending since the Fall 09 season, and it appears that they are still in. But this year, focus has been gradually moving from the slightly oversized 'Boyfriend' blazer, to the more feminine tailored look. White is almost always a trend during the spring/summer seasons, and this year, the best way to wear white, is on a blazer.

Who Wears Short Shorts?

As summer nears, less definitely seems to be more. In contrast to the SS09 season, which featured less revealing items like knee-length skirts and boots as well as harem pants, this SS10 season is all about baring the legs!
Shorts in all forms and sizes have been spotted on the catwalk. And indeed in all forms and sizes.. It's always so interesting to see how designers incorporate their own styles into even the most basic trends such as shorts.
I've separated these differing styles into four looks..

DENIM
For designers like D&G and Twenty8Twelve who really took to the denim on denim trend, it isn't surprising to see many of the outfits in their collections feature denim shorts.

D&G by Dolce and Gabbana, Twenty8Twelve

TAILORED
This is a different take on this trend, as shorts aren't usually tailored. But DKNY and Hussein Chalayan show that this look really does work!

LEATHER
For the biker chick in you, leather shorts are a great way show your personal style whilst still keeping to the trend.
